Ingmar Berman Available for online ordering from L.A.'s Best Video Store, Cinefile.

Y'know, when Christina and I were in there a few weeks ago, I commented how Cinefile is the kind of video store I always dreamed about living around the corner from. Of course, I live on the other side of town (and in L.A. that means a forty five minute or more drive), but, still, it rocks pretty damn hard to live so close to a video store that shelves everything by director.

Recommended Music: Bacalov's The Price of Power

I must’ve seen the movie at some point (the plot synopsis I read is very familiar…) and the music is really remarkable.  Bacalov, while often thought of as a Morricone wanna be, is actually very much his own composer.  His music is a bit more straight forward and uses more traditional instrumentation than the Maestro’s, but, really clearly captures period and and tone in a way that out classes even Morricone.  (His soundtrack for il Postino being the most obvious example of that.)

He didn’t do anywhere near as many Westerns as Morricone, but, I’d put just about any of them up against 90% of Morricone’s work (GBU and Fistful of Dollars really are untouchable in the grand scheme of soundtrack albums.)  The other big difference, for me anyhow, is that Bacalov’s filler music is infinitely more listenable.  Morricone’s got those big amazing themes, but Bacalov’s got the sweet emotional roller coasters.

Coincidentally... you can find it on both iTunes and eMusic for much less than the import on Amazon...

The New Knapsack

So here it is. Made of a rugged (yet alarmingly soft) pre-treated leather, the bag's a mid-century infantryman's bag, which from what they told me at the store was used primarily to keep books and writing supplies (paper and pens etc.) as well as for maps and the like.  Which would make it perfect for me, as I just want something to carry around my various medicines, books, and note taking supplies. I keep finding myself on business calls of the creative persuasion when I'm out and about, and never have the stuff i need with me. Add to that the fact that I'm nearly busting my pockets with all of the crap my new hypo-allergenic state has forced me to stuff in there.

As you can see in the first picture here, it has a simple system of interlocking straps that hold it closed, and allow you to only open as much as you need...

Then, the inside front pocket is clear, for putting in a map, book, or letter during a rainstorm whilst in a bunker or swamp, and has a piece of cotton which was used to dry your reading glasses, magnifying glass,  or whatever needs drying... Me, I'm using it for all of my medications, hand wipes, glasses cleaners, business card holders, etc.

There's two pockets inside, and there's enough room for a journal and a pretty sizeable TPB size novel. That's a 700 page oversize TPB in there, and there's probably still a good 20% more space vertically.

I mostly keep notes on smaller size journals, in fact, I just got a Reporters Notebook style Moleskine that I'm crazy about (It's tough to find bound notebooks that are comfortable for a lefty...)but with all this extra room, I might upgrade to the full size version...

The next shows the thing filled up from the side.  It's still comfortable to hold in your hand, or use the detachable strack to throw it over your shoulder.

And finally, there's a side by side for scale. That's a regular size TPB Graphic Novel.

Oh yeah, I wrote a TV movie.

Mark and I wrote the first draft, and then it was handed off to some other guys who wrote the shooting draft, so it's very likely the movie has very little to do with what we wrote (there's already a few characters listed in the release below that I can't place.)  Anyways, here ya go. Northern Stars - News

Cameras roll for Theyre Among Us by David WiserOctober 10 2007 - Montréal, Québec - Principal photography on the Muse Entertainment MOW production Theyre Among Us has started in Montréal. The frightening tale of alien invasion stars Gil Bellows and Maxim Roy.

What makes this movie different is that the story isnt about an alien invasion from some distant, strange world, but an invasion from within. Literally. Theyre Among Us — directed by Adam Weissman and produced by Irene Litinsky and François Sylvestre — brings the aliens down to earth.

Bellows plays Ben Moosher, an unlikely hero with a dead-end job and a broken heart. Roy plays his ex, Lisa, an ambitious reporter. But when they find themselves in the middle of an alien conspiracy where humans are being poisoned and impregnated with Alien larvae, the pair must put their past behind them and work together to save mankind.

The television feature guest stars Isabella Rossellini as Karla, the editor of the newspaper where Lisa and Ben work, and Judd Nelson as Malcolm, a friendly alien who helps the couple fight his own kind.

They’re Among Us will be broadcast in Canada on SuperChannel and distributed internationally by RHI Entertainment. Based on the story by Thomas Schnauz The X-Files the script was written by Joshua Hale Fialkov and Mark Wheaton along with writing partners Christian Ford and Roger Soffer. Adam Weissman took time out to say, "heres so much talent contributing to this film, both in front of and behind the camera. If a smart and stylish science fiction thriller is your kind of movie, Theyre Among Us will be one to watch"

The film shoots in Montréal until October 27th.

Please note: This movie satisfies a personal goal of having my name appear relatively close to Judd Nelson's.  Go Judd Nelson!

Where oh Where…

I'm getting married in a week and a half.  We just got back from San Jose, and haven't stopped doing wedding stuff throughout.  Meanwhile, we got some incredible news about PUNKS, that requires me to pause all of my other work and crank out some scripts.  Should be announcing that shortly.  I'm also hammering away on this creator owned manga I'm doing with Seven Seas. In other words, I'm really busy.

Sorry for the disappearing act.

Updates…

Hey Gang,This week sees the release of Cyblade: Pilot Season #1.  The book has art by Rick Mays, and is a complete reinvention of the character.  It's also a part of a competition to get me a job writing an ongoing.  I'm competing against some really great talent, so please do your part to help me trounce them.  It'll be available at finer comic retailers tomorrow.  More information on that here: http://www.topcow.com

Also, I'll be appearing with my Punks co-hort Kody tomorrow on Fanboy Radio to discuss Punks and whatever else we have coming down the pipe, so please, take the hour to listen to it live (and maybe even call in, if you can... I'm not sure) here at: http://www.fanboyradio.com .  Also, you can grab onto a podcast version of the interview shortly thereafter.  Coincidentally, the Punks store with T-Shirts, the limited edition version of the Summer Special, etc. should be live in the next day or two.  That's here: http://www.punksthecomic.com

And finally, don't forget about a week from Saturday when I'll be hosting The Future of Graphic Literature at the Los Angeles Public Library's Central Library in Downtown, Los Angeles.  The panel will feature Mark Waid, Kazu Kibuishi, Ross Richie, Christos Gage, Tony Fleecs, and myself.  There'll be a small meet and greet right afterwards.  It's being held on Saturday September 29th at 2pm, more information here: http://events.lapl.org/viewEvent.cfm?eventID=9694 .  If you haven't  been to the Central Library, you're missing one of the Los Angeles' premiere pieces of architecture, and the revitilization of downtown has made the city come alive again, which, in other words, means you don't have to worry about getting mugged anymore.

Thanks for reading, and hope y'all check out my wares,

j.

God I Love Elvis Costello

This was actually an E-mail to Costello loving buddy Mark Wheaton. But, I though it'd be mean not to share it.

The new release of My Aim Is True came out, and it has an entire disk of him playing the album live with the Attractions like 6 months after recording the album. As the album was recorded with The News, this means it's 1000x better, which is nearly impossible as My Aim Is True is one of the best records ever made.

And, also, this: http://www.rctimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll.../1005/MTCN0303

"I recorded some new melodies for some of my older songs, and for a gag I recorded them on just a cassette player. And I didn't have a microphone so I plugged in headphones into the tape recorder, because you switch them backwards, they work as a microphone. I didn't want to be like a Luddite, so I put them on a CDR, and I put 10 of the CDRs in 10 copies of the best of record that we released in April, and hid 'em in the shops in America, just to see whether anybody bought records anymore. And as nobody's found 'em yet and it's now September, I guess nobody buys records anymore. But somewhere somebody's gonna get a little surprise one of these days . . . They're gonna be in Wal-Mart or somewhere, and they're gonna buy one of these records and they're gonna discover a little free gift from me. . . . There's not enough fun with the business of music. It's all very serious. The record thing for as long as it's gonna last, it needs a little mischief put back into it."

PR: Punks Creators Write Press Release

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE PR: PUNKS THE COMIC CREATORS SEND OUT PRESS RELEASE ANNOUNCING BOOK RELEASE

Los Angeles, CA - In the wee hours of Sunday morning, Punks co-creator Joshua Hale Fialkov decided to put together a press release announcing the shipping to comic shops and forthcoming release of PUNKS THE COMIC SUMMER SPECIAL #1.

“Well, Independent Comics are a tough racket... sort of like how it used to be at the Pictures, or in Stalinist Russia, y’know?  Lots of heavy labor and all you get is an affair of Mamie Van Doren and a kick up the bum.”  Fialkov said.  “So, with Digital Webbing releasing PUNKS THE COMIC this Wendesday, August 29th, and with independent comics being what they are, I thought a good Press Releasing was in order.”

The Press Release is the fiftieth or sixtieth Fialkov has written, and PUNKS co-creator Chamberlain thinks it’s a fine one.  “I figure by now, Josh had better know what he’s doing. Sure, he had some misfires, like ‘HIGHLY CONTAGIOUS COLD SORES IN PREVIEWS NOW!’ and ‘COMICS CREATOR ENCOURAGES CHILDREN TO EAT PASTE!’, but, after all of that, Josh has really learned the fine art of Press Release writing.”

The Press Release intends to make sarcastic fun of both Press Releases and independent comic creators so desperate for attention they’ll literally do anything.  One is reminded of the ‘BUY MY COMICS OR I’LL EAT THIS BABY’ headline that soured the entire Press Release industry last year.  However, in an ironic twist, this press release will also be a desperate plea to get attention for Fialkov and Chamberlain’s own independent comic book PUNKS THE COMIC which has been described by Warren Ellis as “One of the Best Singles of the Year.”  It has also been proven to cure genital warts.

To celebrate this press release, Fialkov will be holding a party at Burbank, California’s own HOUSE OF SECRETS COMICS from 5 to 7pm on Wednesday August 29th.  More information on the party can be found here: http://www.hoarseandbuggy.com/blog/?p=683

ABOUT PUNKS THE COMIC: Punks the Comic is the dadadist sitcomic that’s taking the world by storm, at least by independent comic terms.  It’s available at finer comic shops everywhere this Wednesday, August 29th.  You can read a five page preview online here: http://blog.digitalwebbing.com/2007/08/24/punks-summer-special-preview/

ABOUT THE CREATORS: Joshua Hale Fialkov is the Harvey Award Nominated creator of Elk’s Run, Western Tales of Terror, and writer of Vampriella and Cyblade,  Kody Chamberlain is beloved artist of 30 Days of Night: Bloodsucker Tales, Harper Collins’ forthcoming Beowulf Graphic Novel, and a virtual cavalcade of forthcoming projects.  They don’t live together, but if they did, they’d fight light cats and dogs.

ABOUT THE COMIC SHOP HOLDING OUR RELEASE PARTY: House of Secrets is Burbank’s finest comic establishment, with the finest selection of Silver Age and Modern books in the San Fernando Valley.  Their staff is friendly and well groomed, and the store is not scary for girlfriends or wives.  They’re located at W. 1930 Olive Ave. and can be found online at http://www.artoffiction.com.

## END PRESS RELEASE

Kill Your Television

I did it. The impossible dream.  I don't have cable for the first time since age 6.  While this is no grand acheivement for you normal folks out there, the Television has served a key part in my life and my entertainment while slaving away over my keyboard for 8 or 9 hours a day.  We only have one option for cable in our neighborhood, and because of building rules, we can't have a Satellite dish.

From the time we moved into our little two story palace in Glendale, the cable modem and television have been sub-par at best.  The internet was crapping out every 7 or 8 minutes, and the HiDef and Digital Cable Channels would do the same.  Even the basic cable picture quality was horrendous.  It got to a point where we just download or Netflix everything instead, because watching anything over the service was so fucking irritating.

So, what are we going to do now?  Well, there's a couple of things we've used to replace it thus far, and I think our shift to full-on time shifters is complete.

First, the basic stuff.  We have Netflix and Blockbuster Online accounts.  This allows us to have a non-stop stream of movies and tv shows coming in and out.  Blockbuster are a little bit incompetent (I've received the wrong disc at least 4 times over the past two months), but being able to walk over to the Blockbuster on the corner and rent Mansquito for free is a big plus.

Secondly, the interweb.  I've been using the Netflix Streaming service for the past few weeks now, and really enjoy it.  It manages to not slow down my machine too much, while providing some good background noise (like today's viewing of Across 110th Street).  The selection's not great, but, there's a suprising number of things I'm interested in and like watching, so, hooray.

I also bit-torrent or stream many BBC shows (Doctor Who, Jekyll, Life On Mars, etc.) so, that's stuff that Cable or no, I'd be doing anyways.

Which leads me to the number three... we're about 80% in to get AppleTV.  I'm concerned about the lack of HiDef signal (what's the point of having a HiDef TV without any HiDef inputs.)  But, my theory is that we can buy the box, and download season passes to all of the shows I watch on a regular basis for about the price of four months of cable service.  Considering it would take eight months of cable service to watch those self-same seasons, it seems to be a savings.  The picture quality on those big giant TV's at the Apple store seems to be pretty good, but, who knows what that translates to practically.  Now, if I could find a way to import my BBC downloads into AppleTV format and not have it do that irritating shitty framerate, I'd be sold.

And so, the mighty experiment begins.  Three days without TV and counting. Now if you'll excuse me, I got Yaphet Kotto to watch.

Punks the Comic in Previews, Breaks New Records of Awesomeness

April 26th, 2007 - Los Angeles, CA -- Independent sensation PUNKS THE COMIC makes its debut in the May issue of Previews, on stands today. This beloved before it's existence book hits stands after a year of perfecting. It turns out that this was time well spent, as the book has been awarded the AWESOME PRIZE FOR AWESOMNESS from the purely fictional AWESOME SOCIETY OF STUTTGART. The A.S.S. (NO LAUGHING! THIS IS SERIOUS) chariman, Freidrich Von Rafaelson said in a funny fake German accent, "Ve are VERY EXCITED about ze release of Punks. It is purely awesome." At the time of press, his accent sounded more Belgian than German. Due to the staggeringly overwhelming coolness of the book, it has been listed in Diamond Previews FOUR times. You will find it under Digital Webbing on Page 294, with a black and white ad (due to restraints on the amount of free kickassitude allowed in Previews), as a part of the Diamond Staff Picks (which contrary to popular belief does not involve open sores), and as a part of the Indie Spotlight (take that Blankets!). It has also been awarded a certified cool, which, while not an actual 'prize,' in the parlance of press release etiquette, Josh and Kody will pretend it is.

"It's an honor, and a privilege, to be certified cool," Kody Chamberlain answered from his Lousiana based sanitarium, "Thus far, the things I've been certified in have mostly been on the... uh... tantric side of things." He was then fed his pills and promptly returned to his 'soft and cushy day room' which those of us not flinging poo and touching ourselves in public would recognize as a padded cell.

If that is not enough, breaking laws in at least 58 of the 50 states (You probably still haven't heard of Kiwupitatatas, it's just north of New Mexico), PUNKS will be given out Free as a part of Free Comic Book Day on May 5th. Featured prominently in the Digital Webbing Free Comic Book Day Jam 2007. This exclusive three page story will not be featured anywhere else (until someone asks for content, and we're running out of time, so we offer them the reprint anyways), and is a MUST GET!

Both Josh and Kody will be making appearances on Free Comic Book Day to promote Punks. Chamberlain (the long haired artist one) will be a guest at CAPE in Dallas, TX, and Fialkov (the hairy writer one) will be at The Comic Bug in Manhattan Beach, CA. Come by to have whatever portion of your body you reserve for being signed, signed.

The Punks the Comic Summer Special 2007 #1 is 48 pages, featuring a huge amount of story, plus interviews with Independent Comic Superstar Rick Remender and Punk Art Master Art Chantry. All of that in a digest sized, squared bound, full color package will cost you just $4.99.

The Diamond Order Info is MAY07 3402 PUNKS THE SUMMER COMICS SP (MR) SRP: $4.99

For more information, please visit the newly launched www.PunksTheComic.com for previews, news, contests, and poorly told dick and fart jokes.

If you'd like to support the book by pre-ordering (which we highly encourage), please print this order form and drop it off at your local comic book shop.

Josh and Kody are available for follow up questions, interviews, shoe fittings, and embarassing noises.
