Support the YOKA Theater Program
Over the past two years, I've worked tirelessly to build a theater program for the kids at Young Oak Kim Academy in the Pico-Union area of Downtown Los Angeles. Thanks to the generosity of many of my friends, some incredible parents, and a brilliant group of co-workers, we've built a world-class middle school theater program that is fast becoming the pride of LAUSD's Downtown area.
However, due to falling enrollment district-wide, the brutal hit our neighborhood has taken from ICE and rising cost of living, and a decreasing birthrate, our school has been forced to cut four positions — including mine — effectively shutting down the theater program.
But we can make our voices heard and let the School Board and Superintendent know that this school and these kids deserve better than that. These are some of the city's most vulnerable kids, being given an opportunity to learn and grow in ways that have been genuinely life-changing for them.
